Astronauts — I wanted to be one and I always looked up to them for their pristine reputation as heroes. They are the ultimate in science and adventure.
Science Communicators — Bill Nye, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Randy Olson[ (sp?)] Hank Green, and Fran Bagenal. As I re-watched some Bill Nye episode while teaching MS science classes I realized that not only did I watch a lot of Bill Nye as a kid, but it is a fundamental part of how I grew up. I find it too much like my own sense of humor for it to be an accident. Neil deGrasse Tyson as a generally inspiring speaker. I don’t know how I found out about him or when I knew I looked up to him. I do know that one day, just after I finished my teaching career, my mind was wondering early on a weekend in Ljubljana. I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do next, or for the rest of my life. I didn’t have a word for it (I knew I didn’t want to be a classroom teacher anymore) but I thought, “I want to be whatever NdT is.” A few moments later (Wikipedia, of course) I saw that besides being an astrophysicist (which I would also like to do) he is a science communicator, and then I knew that’s what I wanted to get into. As I read into Science Communication after this I quickly ran into the book “Don’t be Such a Science,” which I had actually read a few years earlier. I was looking for something at the library in college (I don’t recall what) when that title jumped out at me and I devoured it then bought my own copy to highlight. While teaching I also discovered Hank Green’s Crash Course Chemistry, which I found so entertaining and funny that I took this to be even more inspiration for what I could do when I could un-grow up. Finally, I’ve seen Fran Bagenal speak in-person and online, from which I learned so so much, was so inspired and energized, that I can’t wait to meet her.
